Play is a serious business; it should be a fun, enjoyable activity, which stimulates the development of mind and body. A good pre-school gym experience can provide social, physical, lingual & intellectual, creative & emotional awareness and improve concentration, competence & confidence. The British Gymnastics ‘FUNdamental movement for early years' programmes range from ‘FUN 4 Baby' through to the ‘Independent learner' improving balance, co-ordination, social and educational skills providing under 5's with a quality physical movement experience. Participants learn how to use different objects to help them practise basic skills such as crawling, walking (running) rolling, hopping, jumping, throwing and catching. They are encouraged to use imagination on adventures, in fairy stories and listening and moving to nursery rhymes, songs and music.

What Pre-School gymnastics is all about.

Pre-school gymnastics is all about fundemental movement and balance. Teaching gymnastics in a fun and educational way, linking the learning of colours, shapes and numbers with gymnastic core skills.  Pre-School gymnastics is a specialised area and coaches must be trained in this specific field to run pre-school gymnastics.

Working with under fives is a rewarding but challenging area. The Pre-school  courses run by the North West General Gymnastics committee contain information on child development, health and safety issues, specialist equipment ideas including hand apparatus to teach skills and the use of music.

Pre-school Gymnastics and Movement courses are run regularly in the region to encourage existing coaches and new, interested people to become involved in this exciting discipline - this area of development involves teaching fundamental movement skills that all young children require to move further ahead in any sport and will give them a headstart for the future.

The region’s BG Pre-school course tutors/examiners are: Gill Waring and Michelle Foster.

History:

Gill has been involved with the sport for over twenty years and has trained many coaches regionally and nationally. She has been on the Pre-school National Panel for over six years and has assisted British Gymnastics in writing the Fundamentals Movement Ideas for Early Years. She currently works as a Sports Development Officer in Salford. She also runs a specialist Preschool club. Michelle has been involved with the sport since her children were born. She assists Wirral Gymnastics Club on a regular basis and is now also a qualified Judge! Her daughter competes regularly in regional competitions.

The next available course is a Level 1 Pre-school. This will be held at Salford Specialist Centre for Gymnastics on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st January 2008.
